;w
t'J326i01 13 ~ 07
•
N0.455
PAGE Z THURSDAY, MARCM ZT, ZOOI ~ DOIOt:!
Redundancy,'according to the Scott
~Foresman Advanced Dictionary, is 1.
More than is needed, 2. A redundant
thing, part, or amoune 3. The use of
too many words for the same idea:
wordiness. 4. Presence of duplicate
parts or systems in case one fails, The
root words are from the Latin
redundantem overflowin¢< re- red-
back + undo water (see letters to edi-
tor.)
I was using the first definition when
I wrote that editor's note about no more
letters on the gravel pit. People do not
understand, or ignore the fact, that it is
a privilege to be able to write a letter to
the editor and have t[ published. It is
not a right. On the other hand, your
opinion is very important to us.
I've said this in editorials before and
probably will in the future:. the role of
ferrets to the editor Is to express one's
opinion. There fs a line between using
them as a personal forum to attack oth=
xrs and using them as a place to state
that opinion. The last letters had ceased
to be about an issue; they were taking a
turn towards becoming persona] at-
tacks.
Now, understand I don't mind some-
one writing a letter about tne, because
that's pats of my job, and I'm fair ::
enough to print that letter. But, a couple
of the levers were to and about people '
who had nothing to do with the issue, .;
and were submitted because the writ-
ers perceived something was said about
them that actually was not. In retco- ;
spec[, I wonder if I made the right de-
cision in putting one of those letters in.
Becatue of pas[ experiences, where .
letter writers' wrote then same views .
over and over, and took up several pages
of the newspaper which should have
been dedicated to real news, a polity
was established that._a single writer
could have two levers on the same sub-
ject (unless different circumstances
arise concerning an issue) -see defini-
tion 1 -and all letters had to be 300
words or less (which comes under the .
dcfinidons I and/or 3). '['here are, of
course, occasional exceptions to the
length, but, generally speaking. the
policy remains.
D63
