<br />rn-rR>,ni;c~a~ <br />Wildlife baseline studies were initiated i-n a'iay, 1979 at Peabody tloal <br />Corcpany's `ucia ,line located 3 miles northw~.st of alucla, Montrose <br />County, Colorado, The study area eneo;npassed approximately 106 acres <br />at an elevation of 5700 ft. The objectives of the study included: <br />1. Comprehensive site-specific analysis of all terrestrial cacmunities <br />(i.e., major vegetation types)-represented at tl^.e a'ucla aline with <br />respect to vertebrate species ccsrtposition, habitat affinities, <br />aburriance, and diversity, <br />2. Identification and evaluation of habitat critical to tine support of <br />important wildlife species (i.e., "threatened" or "endangered" species <br />or ot'rer vertebrates protected by state or federal law aryl certain <br />game :animals) and habitat offering mth environaertal and vegetative <br />situations which contribute to maxi:m.an wildlife diversity for the <br />region. <br />3. Provision of a wildlife data base appropriate tb identifying <br />potential impacts on wildlie fro:r, mine develognent and. expansion, <br />.developing ma~ningful and cost-effective mitigation measures for <br />significant impacts, and defi-iing a long-term monitoring program for <br />evaluati-~g the effectiveness of mitigation measures and detecting <br />unforeseen impacts. <br />included in this one-year pzogram were field investigation of mammalian <br />predators, s-na11 mammals, passerine, game and raptorial bixds, and big <br />game species.
