<br />C <br /> <br />~. <br />A.~A DESCRIPTION <br />The Nucla wi lclife study area enconyxsses appra~tinutely 106 acres in the <br />souu'n:est gvaz-ter of 525 T47N R16W approximately 3 miles nort:west of ltiucla, <br />Montrose County, Colorado (see Map 11-1, Appeix3ix R for study area <br />boundaries). <br />Topograai~y and Precipitation. The Nucla wildlife study area is located amng <br />flat to gently rolling farmland at an elevation o£ 5700 feet. Average annual <br />precipitation at the Union Carbide Weather Station (Uravan, Colorado} near <br />the Nucla study area for the years 1972-1979 was 10.08 inches (range o£ <br />8.03 - 12.24 inches) much~of which gensally ocoutzed between July a.-id <br />September. <br />Vegetation and Soils. Five-major vegetation types occur on the study area: <br />1. ilpland sagebrush <br />2. Grassland pasture <br />3. Agriculture (.Alfalfa field) <br />4. Juniper <br />5. Riparian <br />Of tnese five types, the agriculture and grassland vegetative types occupy '~ <br />42 and 238, respectively of the total st.ady area not presently disturb~'~ci by <br />ai.ing operations (Marian Associates 1979).
