1
' Grand Junction Pipe
Surficial Geology Investigation Proposed Soaring Eagle Gravel Pit, Grand Junction, Colorado
January 2~, 1999 Page 4
Valley. It is possible that rrahtral gas deposits are present beneath this site but, development of these resources
is prohibitive at this time and has not been considered an issue within this portion of the Grand Valley.
' Radioactive ores have been mined from the lower Burro Canvon and Morrison Formations, in the
Uncompahgre Uplift to the south. In general, the producing mines and significant deposits are located more
than 20 [rules south of this site.
' GEOLOGIC HAZARDS
This site is wt[hirt the designated 100 Year Flood Plain, shown on the National Flood Insurance Program Maps
for Mesa County, Colorado.
IJuring the course of gravel extraction, some steep slopes will be produced. These steepened slopes are
' temporary in nature and will probably undergo constant modification. It is believed that after the top soils have
been stripped from the extraction area, the height of any steepened slopes will be less than 20 feet and will
probably be closer to l5 feet. Significant slope stability problems are not anticipated on thts site during the
' extraction process. It is recommended that cut or fill slopes above the water table be carefully controlled to
avoid localized aeeas of instability. The slope surface below the water table will tend to Flatten quite quickly.
The arnotmt of the slopes beneath the water table will depend upon the dewatering process and the amount of
' dewatering which will have to be accomplished. It is our understanding that the specific requirements for slope
angles within operating and reclaimed gravel pits will be enforced for this site.
' No evidence of si~tificant ground settlement, ground collapse, undermined areas, mass wasting processes
(other than the Colorado River flooding) or other geologic hazards are present on this site or which would affect
the extraction of the gravel on this site. It is not believed that gwlogic concerns exist on this site which will
affect the fora! reclamation of the proposed gravel pit.
LIMITATIONS
This report is issued with the understanding that findings of this report arc valid as of the present date.
However, changes in the conditions of a property can occur with the passage of time, whether they be due [o
natural processes or [he works of man on this or adjacent properties. In addition, changes in acceptable or
approptiate standards may occur or may result from legislation or the broadening of engineerurg knowledge.
' Accordingly, the findings of this report may be invalid, wholly or partially, by changes outside our control.
Therefore, this report is subject to revrew and should not be relied upon after a period of 3 years.
The recornntatdations of this report pertain only to the site investigated and are based on the assumption that
the soil conditions do not deviate from those described in this rclwrt. if any variations or undesirable conditions
are encountered during wnstruction or the proposed construction will differ from [hat planned on the day of
' this report, Grand Junction Lincoln DeVore should be notified so that supplemental recommendations can be
provided, if appropriate.
