The results of the Cultural Resource Survey indicated that no such listing appears on the
• aforementioned register. Exhibit 4 includes the results of the study of the permit area which
was submitted to the state archaeologist.
Historical Resources
There are no known historic places listed or eligible for listing on the National Register of
Historic Places which lie within any area proposed to be disturbed or likely to be affected
by surface activities. (Refer to the exlu'bit referenced above.}
2.04.5 General Description of Hydrology and Geology
This application addresses a thorough description of geology and hydrology -both ground
and surface water quality and quantity on all lands within the proposed permit area, adjacent
area and the general area.
The Chimney Rock Mine has collected, compiled and analyzed data relative to geology and
hydrology within the permit area. Detailed data collection on the general area occurred
during the summer and fall of 1980. The data generated is the result of intense drilling
programs, field investigation, geologic mapping, aerial photography interpretation,
topographic mapping, data from several pump tests and piezometers, as well as quantitative
and qualitative investigations relative to these tests.
• Figure 2, general geology map, depicts the geology of the area on a regional level. The map
was prepared based upon observation, personal recollection and an aerial photograph.
Therefore, it is not intended to be wholly inclusive, rather it provides the reader with an
appreciation of the significant geologic formations in the mine area. It should be noted that
information currently available applies to geology of the San Juan Basin. The limiting factor
in this instance is that site specific information as applies to geology on a regional level is
not available.
Such specific regional geology is beyond the scope of the drill data in hand. The Geological
Survey Professional Paper 676 is a rather comprehensive source of current information
available on the San Juan Basin. This publication can be obtained from the U.S. Geological
Survey in Denver, Colorado.
With respect to hydrology, the "general area" is defined by Section 1.04 as the topographic
and groundwater basin surrounding the area to be mined during the life of the operation.
This area includes several ephemeral watersheds as well as a perennial stream known as
Stollsteimer Creek. There is no major groundwater basin identified for the area. There is,
however, an alluvial groundwater zone associated with Stollsteimer Creek. Shallow
observation wells, further descnbed in Section 2.04.7, were established at the Chimney Rock
Mine to evaluate the alluvial groundwater zone. Information from these wells will allow
assessment of the probable cumulative impacts to the quantity and quality of the surface and
2.04-3
