Only a very general unifonuity was identified in
the t4iddle Park Formation and consists of the Suddeth coal bed overlain
by 40 feet of clayslone overlain by 30 to 40 feat of a distinct sandstone.
Above the relatively distinct sandstone there is interlayered sand~.tunr and
clay stone which cannot be separated into identifiable layers.
fhe Pierre Shale formation is divided into two memUrrs in the area
of which only the Upper Sandy hlenihr.r rras enr, uwrtered within Lhe. project
area. The Upper Sandy Memher consists of relatively hard clayey sandstone
with in Lerlayered siltstone and shale.
Structurally, the f:err 1.1ine is located ,rlnng the Johnny I4oore Syncline
with the I4cC.allum Anticline to the west, as shown on Fig. 2 In the area
where the open pit is to he exp:uuled, the coal bed sh•ik,~s N1U°I and dips
from 3A to 46 degrees to the east. faulting is evident in thN drilling and
mi aerial photos. The faulting has a primary strike of P177t°F and a nearly
• vertical dip. A vertical displacement of 40 feet eras encountered aL borings
IH-7/-1'~ and TII-77-15C.
SUUSURFACE CODUITIONS
Drilling F'rnrlram
Subsurface conditions were investigated by a series of exploratory
borings. Initially, nine exploratory borings were drilled to identify
suhsoils ar,d Lrdrock, water levels, and to obtain samples for testing.
Six borings were cored full depth with MX core erluipuient to identify
materials and measure 6eddin9 joints and fracture m•ientations. Three
additional rotary borings were drillr.d to identify the depth and thick-
ness of coal and determine water levels. Two shallow horings were
•
