We offer the following comments for your
consideration.
vegetation at the site is characterized as shortgrass prairie. A prairie
dog town is present on-site and represents a portion of a much larger prairie
dog complex that extends over numezous adjacent sections of land. Field
personnel indicate, however, that this particular prairie dog town may have
succumbed to bubonic plague during the summer of 1992 and it may na longer be
active. If Federal monies are being used on this project, a black-footed
ferret survey may be required. We suggest the applicant contact the Regional
office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Denver far that
determination.
Nesting burrowing owls were observed using the site in the summer of
1992. Burrowing owls utilize the abandoned prairie dog burrows for nesting
and brood rearing activities. We recommend that any surface disturbance
avoid that period from April 1st through June 30th, t:te nesting period for
this species. There should be no conflict with nesting burrowing owls if
topsoil removal and stockpiling (activities which effectively destroy any
prairie dog burrows on-site) takes place either prior to April 1st or after
June 30th.
The Division appreciates this opportunity to provide input. Please feel
free to contact us it additional information is required.
erely,
avid ~~ ~ H
wildlife Bi ogis Approved by:
Southeast Region R nald P.
