structure is bordered by the Ross Basin, Sunnyside, Toltec
and Bonita fault systems (see figure D1).
The Sunnyside Mine is an underground hardrock operation
located in San Juan County Colorado, approximately 7.0 miles
northeast of Silverton. Ore production from the mine began in
. the late 1880s in upper level mine workings accessed via numerou!;
adits.in Sunnyside Basin. Ores removed from the mine during this;
period were .processed in a stamp mill constructed on the shore of
Lake Emma, a glacial tarn in Sunnyside Basin. In the early 1900s
the Terry Tunnel was driven enabling expansion of mine workings to
lower levels. Ores removed from the mine through the Terry Tunnel
were transported by aerial tram to the Sunnyside Mi]1 for pro-
cessing, located 2.0 miles south of the Terry Tunnel Portal at
Eureka. Production at the Sunnyside Mill ranged from 50D to 1,000
tons per day from the early 1900s to the 1940s when the mine an~i
mill were idled due to severely depressed metals markets. In 1959,
Standard Metals Corporation acquired leases to the Sunnyside Mine,
and excavated the American Tunnel for mine access, an extension of
the Gold King Tunnel.iocated at the old townsite of Gladstone, some
~ 33o min elevation below the Terry Tunnel Portal. Excavation of
the American Tunnel facilitated mine expansion to lower levels, and
year round access to the mine via maintained county road •110. Cur-
rentiy, active workings of the Sunnyside Mine cover a vertical dis-
tance of 610 meters from 3,230 m to 3,84D m in elevation, and extend
laterally for approximate]y 2,100 m along several combined vein
systems.
~i. •
f
c~.
