When range condition deteriorates, fortis and shrubs increase. When range is in poor
condition, undesirable weeds and annual plants are numerous. Properly managing
grazing improves and maintains range condition. Reducing brush improves range.
Seeding improves range on poor condition. Crested wheatgrass, western wheatgrass, and
Russian wild rye are suitable for seeding. Preparing a seedbed and drilling the seed are
good practices.
Community development and recreation are limited be low strength, shrink-well
potential, and slope. Dwellings and roads can be designed to overcome these limitations.
Community sewage systems will be needed if the population density increases.
The soil is in capability subclass IVe, imgated and non irrigated.
Vegetation
The site vegetation consists of native dry land grasses and weeds and an area of no
vegetation due to the already mined area.
Along the perimeter of the site are drainage ways that have wetland species. No
disturbance is proposed in those areas.
Structures
There are two structures within 200 feet of the site. Both are owned by the City of Rifle.
One structure is east of the operation and is the back wash ponds for the City of Rifle
water treatment process. The other structure is the Operations and Maintenance Building
located just south of US 6 across the street for the site. This building is located at a
ground elevation significantly below the mining operation and is not impacted by this
mining process.
Water Resources in the Area
If water is encountered in the mining operation, it would be discharged to the borrow
ditches adjacent to the site after being treated in an on site sedimentation pond to remove
sediments. This discharge goes directly under US 6 via a culvert and ditch into the
Colorado River.
The City of Rifle has applied to the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment fora Stormwater discharge permit associated with sand and gravel
production operations.
