4 - 73
• 4.5.14 NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL PLAN
As identified earlier in this Section, one listed noxious weed in the permit was identified
during the base line vegetation survey, white top Cardaria Draba.. At this writing, 1996, both
field bindweed, Convo/vuius arvens/s, and Canadian Thistle , Cirsium arvense, have been known
to occur in the disturbed area . Control of the infestations with general use herbicides have
been undertaken by the operator to ensure that these weeds do not become a problem.
Though the operator has been controlling these weeds on the disturbed areas of the mine
property, relatively large infestations of the subject weeds occur on the adjacent highway right
of way and surrounding large areas of undisturbed Bureau of Land Management lands. Seeds of
these noxious weeds from the adjacent uncontrolled areas are undoubtedly reinfesting the
areas where the operator has been controlling the weeds. At the request of the Division, the
operator's control efforts are being formalized with the following noxious weed control plan.
1. Informal inventories of the weed infestations will be undertaken by the operator annually.
Once during the spring prior to blooming of whitetop and once in the fall while plants
• are still actively growing.
2. Control of the weeds will be with General Use Herbicides applied by the operator. If
restricted use herbicides are to be used ,application will be made by a properly licensed
or certified person. All herbicides will be applied as directed on the manufacturer s label
and in conformance with the CSU Extension Service recommendations.
3. Specific herbicides to be used include;
2.4 - D Amine - Numerous trade names • A selective broad leaf herbicide for control of
annual and perennial broadleaf weeds in areas with desirable grasses. A general use
herbicide.
Gly hop sate -Roundup - A nonselective post emergent herbicide to control most
annual and perennial broadleaf weeds and grasses. A general use herbicide.
Controlled areas will be monitored for effectiveness of the treatments. Additional
treatments will be performed as necessary . If necessary, controlled areas will be seeded with
desirable species to discourage subsequent regrowth of noxious weeds.
•
Mo Volume 1 4-29-96
