APPEF7DI~ DD
Straw Dike Specifir_ation
• Purpose: Straw dikes are an integral part of the overall
drainage control plan and sediment control measures at
Colorado T9estmoreland Inc., Orchard Valley Mine. The
purpose of this specification is to standardize usage
and construction of straw di}:es. DiY.es are to conform
to 30 CFR 817.45.
Usage: Straw dikes will be used at, but are not limited
to use at, the following:
1. Areas where sediment transport by surface water is
deemed low by Colorado Sdestmoreland's Professional
Civil Engineer.
2. Areas •,:here runoff is not directed into
sedimentation ponds.
3. Areas where temporary construction might
significantly raise sediment volume.
Construction: Straw dikes will be constructed as follows:
1. ee anchored to the ground by roof bolts (rebar)
so stability of the dike is assured.
2. Be placed on level ground so all water is
filtered.
3. Use straw bales of best quality available.
4. Be constructed and inspected after placement under
the direction of a Cv7I engineer for stability and
filtering capacity.
See Figure 1 for construction requirements.
In~;:. r-~tionc All di;;es will be ins_,rc t~~d ciuarte rly for the
following:
1. Stability
2. Filtering capacity
• 3. Erosion around di}:e
4. Scdimr~nt below dike
Lny di~:es •.aill be replaced as the ~=ngineer deems
nr~c„ ;s.~i y.
