In the event flows can not be easily handled via the use <br />of mud pits, the hole will be mudded using a low-sodium bentonite <br />product, with any excess water being transported by a vac-truck <br />to a permitted disposal site. In addition to the above water <br />handling contingency plans, each hole will contain steel surface <br />casing that will be cemented in place, prior to beginning the <br />hole. This practice will allow for the drill hole, in the <br />unlikely event necessary, to be shut off at any time. The above <br />described plans will assure that all encountered ground water <br />will be contained within the confines of the drill pad. <br />Well Completion <br />Several of these exploration holes may be converted to hydrologic <br />monitoring wells. In the event a monitoring well is completed at <br />a site, the well completion report will be forwarded to the <br />appropriate agencies. It is anticipated that wells will be <br />constructed with 20 slot screen and 8/12 silica sand or a pre- <br />packed, stainless steel well screen. A bentonitic plug will be <br />placed above and/or below the screened interval to prohibit <br />vertical migration and cross contamination of aquifers. Figure <br />2, Typical Monitor Well Completion, illustrates the typical <br />completion method. Once the well is no longer required, it will <br />be grouted from the bottom to top with a cement grout. The <br />casing will be cut off two to three feet below the ground <br />surface, and the surrounding soil will be used to backfill the <br />void left by the removal of the casing. <br />Reclamation <br />The reclamation of the sites will typically progress shortly <br />after completion of each hole. Reclamation will consist of drill <br />hole abandonment, filling in of mud pits, regrading as needed, <br />topsoil re-distribution, and seeding. All reclamation activities <br />will be completed by the end of the fall season of 1996, unless <br />weather conditions prohibit. If this occurs, the reclamation <br />work will be completed the following spring when ground <br />conditions permit. <br />For sites constructed on cropland, the seeding mixture and <br />process will be developed in consultation with the appropriate <br />landowner. For pastureland areas, sites will be reclaimed using <br />the following seed mixture totaling 17.0 PLS lbs per acre: <br />Smooth Brome (7.0 PLS lbs/acre), Intermediate Wheatgrass (6.0), <br />Crested Wheatgrass (3.0), Alfalfa (1.0). <br />Drill Hole Abandonment <br />Drill holes which are not converted to monitor wells will be <br />abandoned as illustrated in Figure 3, Drill hole plugging method. <br />Drill hole abandonment will be conducted in accordance with Rule <br />1 <br />
