[II. REFUSE PILE DESIGN AND STABILITY ANALYSI51 •
This section describes the refuse disposal pile design and stability analyses and the
input data used in the design. Various surface slope stability and subsurface
exploration and geotechnical studies have been conducted for the Mt. Gunnison
Mine since 1976. All the pertinent geologic and geotechnical information was
used in the refuse pile design. The design procedures used for this study are as
follows:
o Review of all the past studies conducted on the slope stability for the
Mt. Gunnison Project.
o Review of industry-wide standards, procedures and regulations.
o Use of subsurface geologic and rock properties data from the drilling
programs conducted since 1976.
o Mine coal refuse sample collection and testing during 1984.
•
o Refuse stability analyses using slices and slip circle methods.
o Refuse pile volume calculations.
o Construction procedures for the refuse pile.
o Pile stability monitoring procedures.
A vast amount of geologic and geotechnical data is available for the Mt. Gunnison
Mine. A detailed literature search was made and old coal waste in-situ and
laboratory properties were compared with actual properties obtained from the Mt.
Gunnison mine coal refuse materials.
