FAX: (30.3) 199.6181
JENKI~IS PIT NO.2
RECLAM.~TION PLAN
(VARR~ GRAVEL PT1~
By
Glenn Camere, P.E.
BACKGROIJND
In September 1995, the Open Soace Department acquired the mineral lease from :.he Varna Company
and agr°.. ~' to finish the rev;atnation ci ;he Varna Grave! Pit located approximate:: 3 miles southwest
of the Town of Superior, Colorado (See Attachment A -Location Map). Any reclamation of the
Varna Gravel Pit must follow the ivL•-ting and Reclamation Plan previously approved by the State of
Colorado vLned Land Rec:a.~natier. Boazd (~fLRB).
The ML.RB recuirements for reclaiming the Varna Grave: Pit are 1) the site must be regFaded to a
maximum slope of ~:1, 2) areas of thick clay must be covered with at least 10 inches of topsoil
material, and 3) the site be revegetated. Once the site is rezraded and reseeded, the ?~.RB will
monitor the site for 3 to f years or t_ntii proper vese~ation has beet established. ~y-'ter this monitoring
period, toe mining permit will be c:osed if all requirements have been met.
ine Vatz Gravel Pit site covers over 120 aces with the larger South Area (anproximatel~y 98 acres)
offering complex challenges that ~Hiil require deliberate planning. Such plans are anticipated for
submittal to Open Soace Board of Trustees by summer 1996, with possiole irr:plementation by Fall
1996 or Spring 1997.
The North Area, by comparison, is smaller (22 acres) and will require relatively strai;zhaorwazd
regrading and revegetadon that could, with approval, be undertaken during Boring 1996. Except for
the recurring need for weed control the reclamation of this portion of the site will then be underway.
A`7ALYSiS
The staff divided the reclamation plzn development effort for the Varna Gravel Pit into the North and
South Areas (approximately 22 and 98 acres, respectively) due to the many issues which must be
analyzed for each area. The issues are outlined below.
ISSUES
ln)
North area (2? acres)
