My analysis of the proposed work at the bend in the river is a little different from
yours. Based on what is shown on their plan map(attached), it appears that the slurry wall is
located approximately the agreed-upon 250' from the river bank in the immediate area of the
river bend. As it extends eastward, i[ gets a bit closer to the river and is approximately 225'
from the river bank in the eastern portion of the "wildlife area". The riprap trench on the east
side of the wildlife area is shown inside the slurry wall and is located approximately 200' from
the river's edge. The grade control structure is of course located entirely within the 250'
recommended buffer.
Your letter to me indicates that you felt these structures were located within l00 feet of the
river, so I'm not sure if one of us is looking at the incottect plan or perhaps measuring
incorrectly. Give the a call (291-7231) and we'll discuss the discrepancy. In my opinion it is
reasonable for tts to request that the slurry wall and rip-rap trench be moved back to the 250'
line, which is not really that much of a change by my calculations. I think that the grade control
structure is something lve ca^ live with so long as the nl!mber of trees to be. removed when ir.
is installed is not excessive.
With regard to [he tree/shrub planting numbers, our emphasis has always been for plantings
along the river, with plantings between the lakes being of less importance. I believe that Larry
Garcia's request to double the proposed tree/shrub plantings was intended to apply to the area
along the river more than the other areas. Thus, we would be satisfied with a commitment to
plant 800 shrubs and 400 trees in the riverside zone, which is twice the original proposal.
Let nle know if you have questions!
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, James S.
