• THE USE OF GRAZING IN MINE LAND RECLAMATION
By
Edward F. Redente, Ph.D.
Range Science Department
Colorado State University
?ort Collins, CO Bp523
March 11, 1991
INTRODUCTION
Much research has been conducted in association with the use
and impact o: grazing on the development and maintenance of plant
communities along many environmental gradier_ts. This research has
examined the effect of herbivory on both biotic and abiotic factors
which interact to support a desired plant community. Grazing, as
a management tool, brings forth important associated questions
• related to: 11 the effect of grazing on standing dead aboveground
biomass, 2) the effect of grazing on plant species diversity
(abundance), 3) the effect of grazing on nutrient cycling
(primarily ,i), and 4) the effect of grazing on soil physical
parameters (Infiltration and bulk density). This brief report
attempts to provide support for the use of grazing as a management
tool to improve plant community development on reclaimed mine
lands.
•
