North North of the site are the railroad ROW on the west side, an Excel Energy substation in the
• north central area and a ranch on the northwest side.
East Three small residences, one ranch and an industrial park on the southeast side border the per-
mit azea.
3. MINING PLAN
The general plan is to sequentially mine Areas 1 through S and leave a combination of lakes and
flat land areas for industriaUcommercialuse after reclamation. Mining Areas 1, Z and 3 are on the
lower bench or terrace while Mining azeas 4 and 5 are located on the second terrace above the river
and have approximately 15 feet more overburden to remove before reaching the gravel. The gravel
zone is approximately 20 feet thick.
Prior to mining, a sediment pond will be utilized on the low point (southwest part of the permit
• azea), as shown on Map C-2. The pond will be approximately 0.7 acres in size and will be exca-
vated to a depth of 5.0 feet. Using an average depth of 3.9 feet, the storage capacity of the pond is
2.73 acre feet. The topsoil from the excavation will be stored in the south stockpile as shown on
Map C-2. Topsoil from Mining Area 1 will also be stripped and stored in the same stockpile. Since
salvageable topsoil in this mining area is approximately 1.0 feet, and Area 1 is 29.78 acres in size,
the total acreage is 30.48 acres and the total volume is 49,170 cubic yazds. The sideslopes of the
pile will be 2H:1 V, 1860' long, 76 feet wide which will hold the 49,170 cy excavated. It will be
seeded immediately after it is created with a dryland seed mix meant for the low rainfall that this
site receives. The mix will consist of Inland Saltgrass and Alkali Sacaton. The sediment pond will
have a gated steel dischazge structure of 8" diameter that can be easily shut to keep the water in the
pond if necessary. This 18' high berm will also serve top provide visual protection to all traffic on
Interstate 70. While this work is being done, the portable facilities will be brought in to the staging
azea at the northwest comer of the permit. No topsoil will be stripped from this area, since the
stockpiles planned have more than enough material to reclaim the land pads for the project.
1S Road Pit 10/02 7
