$.4.$ Exhibit H -Wildlife Information
Wildlife Assessment
Savage and Savage conducted a wildlife assessment for the United Companies proposed
15 Road Pit site on July 30, 2002. Weather during the site investigation was very warm,
dry, and cleaz with temperatures in the upper 90's to low 100's.
Site Description
' The proposed 15 Road Pit site encompasses approximately 215 acres located
approximately one mile northwest of Fruita, Colorado in Mesa County. The site is
located in the W%z of Section 12 and the N%zNW'/< of Section 13 in Township 1 North,
' Range 3 West in Mesa County, Colorado. The property is bounded on the north by U.S.
Highway 6 and 50, an electrical substation, and a fence line, the east by 15'/2 Road, the
south by Interstate 70, and on the west by the Colorado River and a fence line (15 Road
' Pit General Location Map). The property was accessed from 15 and 15Yz Roads.
Topography and Geomorphic Features
t The 15 Road Pit site is nearly equally divided (north-south) between the primary and
secondary alluvial terraces ofthe Colorado River drainage basin. The secondary terrace
' lies approximately fifteen feet higher in elevation than the primazy alluvial terrace. The
channel bed and bank of a secondary channel of the Colorado River is located along the
southwestern boundary of the project site. One relict topographic feature identified from
' aerial photography appeazs to be a relict channel of the Colorado River and is located on
the primary terrace adjacent to the slope of the secondary terrace.
Significant topographic alteration has occurred within and adjacent to the project site.
Within the project site, a complex of irrigation canals, ditches, and drains has been
constructed to facilitate irrigation on the secondary terrace and drainage to the Colorado
River on the primary tenace. U.S. Highway 6 and 50 and an elevated rail line bed have
been constructed along the north boundary of the property. Interstate 70, along the south
boundary of the property, has an elevated bed as well as drainage ditches along the sides
of the roadway.
The property slopes gently from north to south on each terrace, with a significant slope
between the terraces.
Hydrology
~ There are two distinctive hydrologic features within the 15 Road Pit site. The first, and
lazgest significant hydrologic feature is the Colorado River, a secondary channel of which
' forms the southwest boundary of the site. The second hydrologic feature is a complex of
irrigation drainage canals, ditches and drains that traverse the property and ultimately
• flow into the Colorado River.
