Levis College <br />Durango, Colorado <br />Atlantic Richfield Company ie currently planning the development <br />of !ts Mt. Gunnison Y.ine--an underground coal mine near Somerset, <br />Colorado. Baseline environmental studies on the property began in <br />late 1975. The Mining and Reclamation Plan vas submitted to the <br />U.S. Geological Survey in August 1975. This archaeological study Ls <br />a part of those baseline studies and necessary for approval of the <br />Mining and Reclamation Plan. <br />To date Atlantic Richfield Company hoe phased its development <br />• <br />activities into two parts. The first phase was the development of <br />the Sylvester Gulch Teat Adit in late 1975--an F-seam bulk sample <br />coal operation. The second phase will be the development of the <br />Mt. Gunnison Mine some time in the near future. Dr. Susan Applegarth <br />of the Ft. Lewis College Anthropology Department has performed the <br />archaeological surveys on areas aub~ect to disturbance by both of <br />these operations, Thia report cove re both of [hose survey efforts. <br />The Sylvester Gulch survey was approved by the State Archaeologist <br />• <br />prior to initiaiinn of the Test Adit activities. The Mt. Gunnison <br />Mine facilities survey viii be forvarded to the State Archaeologist <br />and State Historical Society for their review. Curly tvo sites, <br />both historical in nature, vets discovered. The State Historical <br />Society has previously indicated that neither site varranted preser- <br />vation efforts, Nevertheless this report viii be submitted for <br />13 <br />
