~~
x
Maps of site features were made by Brunton compass and metric
• tape. Cultural materials were collected if [hey were considered to
be temporally diagnostic. Data relative to each locality vas recorded
on the standard Archaeological Survey of Colorado Inventory Sheet.
Site localities were recorded on laboratory copies of the Somerset
7.5' quadrangle map. No sub-surface test excavation was employed.
All related materials are on file at the Department of Anthropology,
Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado 81301.
RESULTS
Two sites of historic non-aboriginal occupation were located
and subsequently identified by the designations SGN036 and SGN037.
5GN036 is located in the SE~'E~ of Section 16. Features
include two partial structures (Figures 4 and 5) of stone construc-
tion. A third structure may be represented by two burned upright
• posts. Miscellaneous building and equipment parts litter the site
area.
SGN037 is located in the NE-}STE} of Section 21. It is identified
by two plank/log constructed buildings (Figure s•6 and 7) and the
collapsed remains of a subterranean cellar, fronted by a stone wall
extending along the east perimeter of the site.
RECO2~U;NDATIONS
It is clear from the historical events related to SGN036 and
SCN037 that neither has local, state, or national historical signifi-
cance. Mitigation of impact to both is considered complete upon
submittal of this analysis. However, a concentrated oakbrush
community extends over approximately 707. of the area proposed for
•
14
