IZE-ESTABLISHMENT OF VEGETATION
'
SEEDING: A pure seeding of Luna Pubescent Whe at Grass is
planned. Seeding rate is 14.0 pure live seed per a cre drilled, or
i 28.0 pounds PLS p er acre broadcast. Seedbed shall be well settled and
' firm, but friable enough to place seed at depth of 1/4 to 3/4 inch.
Permanent seeding shall be done between October 15 and May 15, as long
as the ground is not frozen. If seed is broadcast, th e soil will be
' raked and packed after seeding. Use of fertilizer is optional.
TOPSOIL: All available topsoil should be stockpiled for use
' during revegetation. All the A horizon shall be removed. Where the
A horizon is less than six inches thick, all unconsolidated material
may be used. For increased soil productivity after the gravel
' extraction, the B horizon and part of the C horizon (if present) shall
be stockpiled separately and used to reconstruct a soil profile.
If the stockpile will be idle for more than three months, it must
be stabilized to prevent erosion. A mulch may be applied for periods
of approximately six months. A temporary seeding (cover crop) should
be used if the stockpile will be idle for more than six months.
Successful installation of either mulch or cover crop will control
erosion by both wind and water.
' MULCH: When mulch is used it will consist of either long-stemmed
hay or straw, applied at 4,000 pounds per acre. Mulch will be
anchored by crimping to a depth of at least four inches. At least 50
percent of the mulch by weight shall be 10 inches or more in length.
' Mulch will be free of noxious weeds and weed seeds.
COVER CROP: A cover crop may be used in place of mulch. The
' cover crop would be used one year before the seeding of the permanent
grass; the permanent grass would be drilled into the standing stubble
' of the cover crop. Type of cover will vary, depending on the time of
' year. Warm season cover (sorghum, sudangrass, etc.) will be seeded in
the sprin~3 and early summer. Winter grains will be seeded in the late
summer. .4 companion crop (seeding a cover crop at the same time as
the permanent grass) in not recommended.
1 Cover crop seeding rates and dates:
Sorghum: 2 to 4 pounds/acre May 15-July 15
sudangrass: 5 to 10 pounds/acre May 15-July 15
Spring small grain: 25 to 25 pounds/acre April 1-July 1
Winter small grain: 20 to 30 pounds/acre Aug. 15-Sept.15
' A coder crop may also be used for temporary cover, where
vegetativ~a protection is needed for longer than six months but less
than two dears.
1

1
