UNITED STATES NATURAL RESOURCES 325 W. Rainbow
DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION Salida, Colorado
AGRICULTURE SERVICE (719) 539-7331
TO: Larry Sandell
Colorado Lime Inc.
P.O. Box 1044
Salida, CO 81201
Dear Sir,
Enclosed is the update on the information on reclamation and
vegetation for the Colorado Lime Quarry located above
Monarch, CO. This site was reviewed in September of 1996.
At that time there were 4 different disturbed areas. Three
of these areas were on talus slopes and bedrock. These
areas should not have problems with future erosion.
The fourth area consisted of the large tailing pile located
on the west side of the site. This pile is now in the
process of being removed.
As per our discussion, the size of the reclamation area is
being increased. Since the increased area still encompasses
the same four disturbed areas, the information in the
September 1996 review would still be valid. If after mining
there are areas with material that could erode, measures
should be taken to ensure that erosion does not occur.
These options would still include the following
possibilities. Loose material could be covered with topsoil
and revegetated. Plant materials could also be planted
directly into the material if it will support plant growth.
This could be determined by chemical analysis and also by
establishing test plots to see what plant materials may be
adapted to this site. Our office would be willing to assist
you with establishing plant material test plots.
If any new areas are disturbed and need future reclamation
work, we can also assist with seeding rates and
recommendations.
As of this time there has not been any soil survey work done
in your area. Please contact us at the above number if we
can be of any additional service.
Sincerely,
n Nelson
District Conservationist
