Cropland is the other mnjor agricultural land use in the region. Pri msry crops include
winter wheat and hay. As shown in Table 4-1, moat nay is irrigated) and the pro dc•ctivi ty
ranges from l.5 to 1.0 tons per acre, s'heat is primarily a non-irrigated crop Mite an
average yield of 24,0 bushels per acre. Some wheat is irrigated, Rowever, and has a much
greeter y{old - 4t,0 bushels per acre. Some barley and spring wheat is oleo grown.
Still another land use category is that of fish and wildlife habitat which incorporates
land uses gfven over wholly or pari{eily to the production, protection, or manag~m+ent of
species of fish or wildli te. Mhile there are no specifle fntenai vely managed urea of Chia
type present, the whole study .sraa is part of the Colorado Division of Wildllfe':t (CbOM)
"Sig Came Management Untt 13^, Host wildlife use of the area occurs simuitaneouaty
with the other land uses in the area.
MiShcife Resources informatfon for Routt County obtained by ERT from CDOk also designates
the study area as eri tf cal wi nt.er range and a production area for mule dear. Elk and mule
deer were the Doty 61g game specfea observed by ERT on the study area during field
investigations. Other important game spades that are potenetalty present in ins sraa
include sage grouse, snare-tailed grouse, blue grouse, and cottontails. Aquatic habitat
in the study area 1s minimal. Nora detailed wildlife information is avattable in Tab tl,
kifdlifn Survey.
A final land use which has seasonal Smportance is tHai of hunting which would ccero under
the category of Recreation, Harvest Reports evaflable from the CDOM include data on big
game, small game, furpearers, varmints. and birds. Aa indicated eerlfsr, big gams spaeiea
in the sraa are primarily mute deer and elk.
Dots for 1976, 1978, and 198D suggest that deer kills fluctuate reflecting wmsther and
CDON management obJectlves. Tha elk kill suttees rate for Routt County to the highest in
Lhe state, whtl• the deer kill success rote 1s the sixth highest in the state. Dots from
the 1981 rifle hunting season shows that 3,697 elk and 3,479 deer were Harvested. In
general, hunting pressure, in tarma of the number of hunters, naa bean increasing; but
this phenomenon appears to be a part of the management program as success rates have
remained high,
Data for small game and other Harvest categories 1n Routt County indfcate that hunting
pressures (number of hunterai increased during the period 7976-87, Success (k511) rates
8
