BIM BURNT SHALE PIT
NORTH OF L,~1F~
SCAM9AIZY

The pit is located on the northwest side of State Highway 139, 20.3
miles North of It~ma, Highway Mile Post No. 21.7. The area is located
on BIM ground.
The pit is a strata of burnt shale and sandstone with sow soil overbur-
den. The pit has been used in the past by Garfield County and the Depart-
ment of Highways for road construction and maintenance in the area.
We intend to use the pit for maintenance and construction work in the
Lbuglas Pass area. Quantities used frcen the pit each year will vary,
depending on the road conditions.
Reclamation will consist of contouring the pit to blend with the surround-
ing area. Terraces will be left with near vertical slopes between them.
Soil overburden will be saved and spread over the pit floor and terraces
where possible. The area will be seeded and a straw mulch applied.
