( 13. Olney-Vona area
Deep, nearly level to moderately sloping, well drained soils that
formed in calcareous sandy sediments. . _
This soil area is in the southeastern part of the survey area. It
occupies about 12 percent of the total acreage. About 40 percent of the
area is the Olney soil, 25 percent Vona soil, and the remaining 35
percent is soils of minor extent.
The Olney and Vona soils both have sandy loam surface layers. The
Olney soil has a sandy clay loam subsoil and the Vona soil has a sandy
loam subsoil.
The minor soils in this area are the well drained Ascalon and Bijou
soils and the excessively drained Valent and Wigton soils.
Most of this soil area is used for grazing livestock. About 10 percent
of the area is dryland farmed, mostly in the Olney soils. A larger
percentage had been farmed in the past but because of lour precipitation
and wind erosion hazard many fields were abandoned or reseeded to grass.
The potential for homesites on this soil area is good and fair for
wildlife habitat.
3
