• Revecetation Monitorina
Monitoring of revegeiated areas at the Seneca II Mine wilt consist of qualitative evaluations and quantitative
measurements. Qualitative evaluations will be carried out annually during the growing season, while
quantitative measurements and evaluations will be on a more periodic basis.
Qualitative evaluations will consist of visual observations of newly seeded areas to evaluate seeding
success, note excessive rilling and gullying, determine compostion of establishing species, identify potential
noxious weed problems and estimate the degree of speces establishment through natural regeneration.
Qualitative evaluations may extend past the first several years for areas of new rill and gutty repair, areas of
noxious weed control, areas requiring restrtded interseeding, or areas that have been planted to trees and
shrubs.
As stated above, monitoring through quantitative measurements will be cenied out periodically on
revegetated areas at the Seneca II Mine. Periodic monitoring of a given area of reclamation (identified by
• year of initial seeding) will be conducted in years 2, 4, and 7. Reference area sampling may be conducted
coincidentally with revegetalion monitoring. For purposes of this discussion, quantitative sampling during
the last two consecutive years of the extended liability period is not considered monitoring. The data and
results from the quantitative monitoring program will be provided to the Division by the March 30 filing of the
Annual Redamation Report.
The following discussion details parameters to be sampled, sampling methodologies and sampling intensity
for the revegetalion monitoring program.
Sampling Parameters.
Cover. Cover data will indude cover by species (both absolute and relative values), total vegetative cover
and cover values for litter, rock and bare ground. Mosses and lichens will be included if present.
Production. Produdion data will be collected as total herbaceous. In cases where additional composition
information is desired, production will be collected by herbaceous growth forms. Shrub production will not be
• collected. Production values will be in g/mz, Ibs/ac, and kg/ha.
TR-37 13-29 Revised 04/05
