Seedbed Preparation. Seedbed preparation measures will generally not be practiced on reGaimed areas.
Direct hauling of topsoil is the preferred method of topsoil replacement. In addition, invading native species •
will be present on reclaimed areas topsoiled from stockpiles. Seedbed preparation such as disking on the
contour may reduce germination or establishment of desirable native plant species in these topsoiled areas.
Rangeland drills are used for seeding operations and this type of equipment is able to handle the rough field
conditions left by the scraper fleet replacing topsoil.
Seedbed preparation by tillage will be considered in the following situations. Offset disking on the contour
will be used in areas where excessive surface compaction has occurred during topsoil replacement, where
surface roughness is too severe to complete seeding operations, or in compacted non-topsoiled temporary
reclamation. In addition, areas with excessive weeds or undesirable vegetation growth may be controlled by
mechanical tillage using offset disking on the contour. In shrub establishment areas, competing herbaceous
vegetation may be controlled or eliminated by contour disking operations prior to shrub seeding or planting.
The shrub establishment areas will be identified in the field and tillage will be conducted a suffiaent number
of times during the growing season to control vegetation.
Controlling weeds or other competing vegetation in seeding or shrub planting areas may also be cartied out
through the use of chemical herbicides. Large scale use of herbicides is not being promoted; however, they .
have a high level of utility when controlling problem perennial weeds in permanent revegetation areas
requiring reseeding, or where surface stability in a shrub establishment area is critical. Any herbicides used
will be based on recommendations in the most current Colorado Weed Control Guide issued by the
Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Service. Prior to the application of any herbicide, approval
of their use will be requested from CDMG. The herbicides will be registered for the use intended and will be
applied by certified applicators with strict adherence to the label. See the weed and pest control section
below for additional information on the weed control program.
Seed Mixes and Plantino Lists. Two seed mixes have been devebped for permanent revegetation.
Complimenting the seed mixes used in permanent revegetation are lists of tree antl shrub seedlings to be
used in concentrated planting areas on the mine permit area. A shrub seeding fist, temporary stabilization
mix, and a list of annual grains to be used for cover cropping complete the lists of plant materials to be used
in the various revegetation activities.
Initial considerations in the development of the permanent mores and seedling lists included the anticipated
reGaimed area site conditions and the desired revegetation communities. Specific goals used to develop
the permanent seed mixes and seedling lists incuded rapid antl long-term surface stabilization, ease of •
establishment, maximum use of native species, adequate species diversity, high levels of utility for livestock
TR37 1310 Revised 04/05
