<br />r'.:ii. ~:~rl <br />In July, 1932, personnel of La Plata Archeolegica: Consultants, <br />Inc. conducted an archeological survey of 175 acres o_° land to be <br />ir.:pacted by t!:e proposed e~:pansion of the Ct:ir:nev Rocs; Coal Ptine <br />in P.rchuleta County, Colorado. Land o:aned by the USDA Forest <br />Service - San JL'an ?4atienal Forest, and private surface o;.~erships <br />a.re involved. The Federal government csa all r..ineral r^_ghts. <br />During the course of the investigation, two prehistori;, a:-cheolo- <br />tical sites and three historic sites were recorded, as well as <br />five isolated artifacts. One archeological site (5 _;i~0), a <br />?ueble II Anasazi lithic and sherd scatter, is located within <br />~.he project area, and will require further investigation (site <br />resting) before its significance can be fully evaluated. The <br />other archeological site (5':752) consists of a kiva.and room <br />' r_o:tple>; dating to the Pueblo II :.rasa2i period. It is located <br />i:-~ediatei.; outside of the sLrvev area, and is ccnsicered eligi- <br />ble for no:.iination to the ?rational Register of Historic Places. <br />The historic sites are alJ. located within the proposed lease <br />boundaries, and include an apparent homestead (5A~?749), an aban- <br />dor.ed strip mine (SP:.?751), and a cemeter.~ (SPA755), a1i dating <br />to the ear'_y to nid 20t` century. r~dditiona]. work has been <br />reco.~~-:ended on: three sites wlt:]in the 1P.aSe area ir. oreer to <br />:-.alu.:te the significance of these rescur.ces, or to mitigate <br />r.;ir,e _:tpact. .t is strongly recoFmended that the cemcterv be <br />strictly a•:eided by ail mining, and related activities.
