Introduction
The Bowie No. 2 Mine was constructed and opened by Bowie Resources Limited
during the spring and summer of 1997 with coal production and development
beginning on August 15, 1997. The mine began longwall production during
November 1999 and currently produces coal at the rate of about 5 million tons
per year.
There is an active coal mine waste disposal area (Permit Volume IV) that was
sized to accept miscellaneous roof fall material and other minor amounts of high
ash coal encountered in the mine. This new coal mine waste disposal area is
sized to handle refuse from the preparation plant along with other miscellaneous
high ash coal. The disposal area is located east of the existing disposal area
and north of State Highway 1336: The new disposal area was to have a
capacity of about 2 million cubic yards. However, a reduction in the slope angle
reduced the capacity to approximately 800,000 cubic yards. There is a coverfill
pile, topsoil stockpile, diversion ditches, collection ditches and a new sediment
pond associated with the new disposal area.
• The facility will be located, as shown on Figure 1, along the toe of the natural
slope and adjacent to the old railroad bed. The Bowie No. 2 Mine has not
generated a significant amount of coal mine waste in the past few years,
however the preparation plant generated significant quantities. The coal mine
waste generated from the operation during the initial five year life of the pile was
estimated to be about 1,000,000 cubic yards. During the period from June 2004
through April 2006 (23 months) the pile was nearly filled to capacity.
Approximately 1,000,000 tons (750,000 cubic yards) of gob were hauled to the
pile during that period.
A new section of haul road was constructed along the toe of the fill and is shown
on Figure 1. Details of the haul road are presented on Map-16, Volume II.
TR-43 - 1 - 05/06
A PPkoveD
q~lr ~0 6
