The samples were taken from the field in clean polyethylene bags.
The soil was thoroughly air dried before being sealed tightly. Before
delivery to the lab each sample was split into two parcels, one to go
to the lab and the other for storage in a sample archive as a precaution
in the event a duplicate sample might be needed. In all thirty samples
were analyzed from thirteen locations representing nine soils and eleven
mapping units. Graphic representations of the soil profiles at each of
the thirteen sampling sites have been prepared and are presented at the
end of this report. Twelve mapping units are shown on the Soils Map, not
counting disturbed areas. Table 1 shows the soils legend and recommended
stripping depths.
In describing and mapping the soils of the project area, careful atten-
tion was given to topsoil stripping depths. Several of the major soils of
the area (Splitro, Winevada, Coutis), as a matter of fact, are part of a
• depth-catena sequence and were mapped accordingly.
In each case, the mapping units drawn on the Soils Map represent areas
which are as nearly uniform in recommended stripping depths as possible at
the scale mapped. These depths are specifically discussed in the map unit
descriptions of this report, including how to determine easily in the field
of the break between suitable topsoil and unsuitable underlying material.
These same criteria were used in the reclamation section of the application
to calculate topsoil volumes for areas to be disturbed.
The samples were analyzed by the C.S.U. Soils Testing Lab in Fort
Collins, Colorado, according to their standard procedures. The analytical
results are shown in Table 2 of this report.
Table 2 in combination with the forms depicting soil profiles at each
sampling location (see pages II.I-17 to II.I-29) gives the horizons and
sample depths that each sample in Table 2 represents. Each sampling location
• was numbered by Roman numeral and carried through on Table 2, the soil profile
6-81 II. I-4
