Additional Notes on Groundwater
The Grasse Creek Mine area contains no appreciable groundwater above
the double ledge sandstone (See page II.D-4) which is about 150' below
the Blacksmith coal seam. All drill logs available show groundwater to
be virtually non-existant. Water from the well drilled for dust control
water comes from the sandstones below the Blacksmith seam. The rocks im-
mediately above, between and immediately below the coal are shales and
shaly sandstones which are relatively tight and impermeable and lack the
porosity necessary to be considered aquifers. The good sandstone aquifers
in the Iles Formation are not exposed in the permit area nor will they be
encountered during mining.
There is a saturated zone of alluvial water in direct hydrologic con-
tact with Grassy Creek. Its width is the valley bottom (50' to 150') and
• its depth is from 15' to 30'. The material in this saturated zone is sedi-
mentary rock pebbles and valley fill clay and silt. The three wells (moni-
tor wells 1 through 3) rise and fall with stream flow, high levels during
runoff and low levels when Grassy Creek is dry. Because of the lack of
groundwater to test there are no "groundwater" analyses. This report does,
however, include analyses of the••water from the Monitor wells located in the
alluvium alongside and under Grassy Creek.

8-81 II.E-3
