:. ,.
-4- Loamy Plains ll6

Forbs will increase and shrubs such as broom snakeweed, small
soapweed, and rubber rabbitbrush will also increase. Plant ~~'`
species likely to invade or increase on this site or increase in
density will be broom snakeweed, plains prickly pear, walking-
stick cholla, red threeawn, wooly locoweed, ring muhly, buffalo
grass, tumble grass and annuals such as Russian thistle, kochia, '
annual sunflower and puncture vine. Burrograss has invaded this
site when drought and overgrazing has reduced the blue grama.
This grass is very unpaltable and persistent.
d. Vegetation density 1/ is approximately 30 percent.
1/ Vegetation density = basal area. This is the area of ground surface
covered by the perennial stem or stems. Usually, this is measured one
inch (2.54 cm) above the soil in contrast to the full spread of perennial
foliage.
4. Annual Production
If the range is in excellent condition, the approximate total annual
production (air-dry) is:
favorable years 1,200 pounds/Ac 1,360 kg/Ha
normal years 800 pounds/Ac 907 kg/Ha
unfavorable years 200 pounds/Ac 227 kg/Ha
Of this production 10 percent will likely be unpalatable or out of
reach to grazing animals.
5. Soils
These soils are moderately deep to deep and well drained. They
formed on upland slopes. From calcareous silty, loamy, and gravelly
material or from silty material weathered from limestone and shale.
Most of the soils are highly calcareous.
Some of the soils (i.e. Baca) are normally leached of lime, and
white mottles indicate a zone of line accumulation just below the
subsoil. A few others (i.e. Manuel, Minnequa) have small fragments
of limestone occuring throughout the profile with a moderately to
t,,-::.: strongly alkaline subsoil. Other soils (i.e. Wiley) have
accumulations of small, soft modules of line just below the subsoil
~, but lime is not leached out. Some soils (i.e. Manzanola) contain
fine gypsuvlcrystals in the substratum.
Typically the surface layer is loam, clay loam, or silt loam. The
subsoil is loam, silt loam, clay loam, silty clay loam, or clay.
Most of the soils are fairly uniform in profile characteristics.
Other soils have many variations. They vary mainly in depth to f,~
bedrock, thickness and texture of different horizons, amount of `
gravel in the profile and in the characteristics of the parent ~ ',
material.
