• Site Number 5RT166
Temporary Number Y-T-4
Site T}•pe Historic homestead
Cultural/Temporal Euro-American/ca. 1909
Affiliation
Nearest Nater Check dam on site
Environmental Setting The site is located in an arroyo bottom with
a western aspect and an elevation of 2,313
meters. Aspen, snowberry, raspberry,
wheatgrass, yarrow, thistle, and sage occur
on the site.
Site Area 30 m x 17 m
Site Description This site is a' relatively small homestead
situated downslope and to the north of
5RT165. The homestead, which was built by
'.7r. Linholm,* consists of a small cabin, an
attached tool shed, possible outhouse,
chicken coop, and a pond. The cabin, which
• has northern and western windows and lacks
a roof, is constructed of sawn and axe-
notclied logs. Nails, including finishing nails,
were used in construction. The attached
shed is partially dug back into the wall of the
drainage. A small rectangular foundation of
milled lumber may be the remains of an
outhouse. Across the drainage (northwest)
are the remnants of a chicken coop and a pile
of crushed oyster shells. Only the corner of
the coon, which was constructed of sawn,
notched logs, still remains. An earthen and
log dam south of the cabin (up the drainage)
still holds a supply of water. Athick-walled
7/8"(outside diameter) pipe extends from the
dam and terminates near the cabin.
According to Mr. Yoast* this homestead is
about 70 years old. Artifacts observed
include a wood burning stove (Cribben and
Sexton, Chicago-Pennant Universal), photo-
. colored purple bottle glass, photo-colored
green plate glass, large forged nails, and
small wire finishing nails with clamp marks
and symetrical heads.
•
* Personal Communication, Leonard Toast, October 2, 1979
?3
