•
Msrch 1992 Cos/ Rs/ass Plesficiry Resu/fs end Rs/afsd Stability /mp/icstiona ~ 1
The stability analyses for the refuse pile indicated that the strength properties of the fine refuse material ue
dependent on the plasticity of the material (see main report). Thercforc, subsequent to submission of the
original stability report, a plan was developed and submitted to CMLRD to evaluate the plasticity of the fine
refuse through a sampling and tesritlg program. The proposed plan is described in Attachmem B.
Ten samples, irclutfing six samples of fine refuse from various locations on the refuse pile and four samples
talten directly from the belt dewarering press dischazge, were collected a~ tested. Locations for the refuse pile
samples arc shown on the [tarp presented az Attachment C-1, sample descriptions ue ircluded in Attachment
C-2, and laboramry analysis reports are presented in Attachment C-3.
The results of sampling and testing of fine refuse material from both the existing refuse pile and the preparation
plant ue presented in Table C-l and shown on Figure C-l. The results indicate that the fine refuse material
is gererally a low phuticity material with plasticity indices of between 0 and 12. nth the exception of Sample
10A, all sample results fall below the A-lire (indicates organic comporcm of samples) az shown on Figure C-1.
Since it was not (mown whether the ammalous value was a result of different material ercouruered by the
mit3irlg operation or whether it was a testing error, it was recommended [haz the Attetberg Limits Tests be
repeated on this sample. The results from the retest (Sample No. lOB) indicated testing error, with the actual
plasticity index value being consistem with other test results.
Table C-1
RESULTS OF ATTERBERG L~-~IITS TESTS
1I ,,
u
SauWk tn'•tioa Malcrial
Typc Lquid
Limn Plasc
Limi Plaaicny
Index USCS
Symbol
RetLx Pile, No.l, 2128/92 Fire Refux 73.6 29.1 1.3 MI/OL
Refuse Pile, No. 2, 2/28/92 Fire Refux 32.2 25.3 6.9 MUOL
Retlue Pile, No. 3, 2/28192 F'me Re(ux 32.1 25.3 6.8 MIIOL
Refuse Pik, No. 4, 2/7BN2 Fns Refux 28.6 28.1 0.5 MLOL
Refuse Pile, No. S, 2/28192 Fire Refux 35.6 30.8 4.8 ML/OL
Rea~x Pile, No. 6, 288/92 Fns Refux 28.5 30.9 NP MUOL
Beh Ras, No. 7, 2128/92 Fire Refux 29.7 36.4 NP MiIOL
Ikh Rw, No. 6, 2128/92 Fire Refux 37.5 28.8 8.7 MI/OL
Belt Pass No. 9, 7/25192 Fire RePox 41.8 47.4 NP ML/OL
Beh Rea No. IOA, 3/25192 Fine Refux 41.9 24.1 17.8 CL
Ben Pas No. IOB, 3I2S192 Fire Refus 41.9 30.0 11.9 MVOL
Naes: 1) Santpka obuined by SaMCsld ssfl
2) Sampka teskd by Wyoming Amlyliul laboratoris, Inc.
•
A review of the above data indicates that all of the fine refuse is an organic silt or an organic siltclay of low
plasticity.
~,..,y,prom+s
~~~~
