UPDATED NATURAL RESOURCES INVENTORY FOR
SOUTH OF DIVIDE STUDY AREA
C J
•
The only major water body in the study area is Minnesota Reservoir, which is located in the
northwest corner of the area on Dry Fork. The reservoir receives runoff from the Dry Fork
drainage basin as well as irrigation water imported via Deep Creek Ditch.
2.1 Wetlands and Riparian Areas
Riparian and wetland vegetation occurs along major drainageways and at stock ponds, seeps, and
springs. Wetlands are areas that have positive indicators of wetland vegetation, wetland soils,
and a wetland water supply. All three parameters must be met for a wetland to be considered
wetland. The criteria and methods used to delineate wetlands are contained in the Corps of
Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual (Manual) (U.S. Deparhnent of the Army, 1987). A
determination of whether a species is a wetland plant is based on ratings in the List of Plant
Species That Occur in Wetlands: Intermountain (Region XIII) (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
1988). Plants rated as "facultative," "facultafive wetland," and "obligate" are considered to be
wetland species. Common wetland species in the South of Divide area are listed in Table 1.
TABLE 1
Common Wetland Species That Occur in South of Divide Area'

Stratus Common Name Scientific Name Wetland Rating
Trees Narrowleaf cottonwood Populus angustifolia FACW
Blue spruce Picea pungens FAC
Box elder Acer negundo FACW
Shrubs Willows Salixspp. FACW-OBL
Hawthorn Crataegus erythropoda FAC
Redtwig dogwood Suida sericea FACW
Mountain maple Acerglabrum FAC
Alder Alnus tenuifolia FACW
Grasses/grass-like Red top Agrostis alba FACW
plants Tufted hair grass Deschampsia caespitosa FACW
Foxtail badey Hordeum jubatum FACW
Spike rush Eleocharis spp. OBL
Bluejoint reed grass Calamagrostis canadensis OBL
Sedges Carex spp. FAC-OBL
Rushes Juncusspp. FAC-OBL
Bulrushes Scirpus spp. OBL
Broadleaf cattail Typha latilolia OBL
Forts Cow parsnip Heracleum lanatum FAC
Nettles Urtica dioica FAC
Bittercress Cardamine cordifolia FACW +
' The species in this table area indicative of riparian areas, also.
831-032.670
May 2005
Wrighi Water Engineers, Inc.
Page 3
