• UPDATED NATURAL RESOURCES INVENTORY FOR
SOUTH OF DIVIDE STUDY AREA
1.0 INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE
This report provides an updated inventory of natural resources in the South-of-Divide study area
for Mountain Coal Company (MCC). Natural resources addressed in this report include: seeps,
springs, stock ponds, wetlands, and riparian areas. Wright Water Engineers, Ina (WWE)
completed an inventory of these natural resources in 1997 (fieldwork in 1996), and the results of
this inventory are contained in two reports entitled: Wetland and Riparian Area Inventory-
South of Divide Study Area, Gunnison County, Colorado (February 1997) and Seep, Spring, and
Stock Pond Inventory of the South of Divide Study Area, Gunnison County, Colorado (February
1997).
The purpose of this investigation was several-fold, as follows:
• Update the previous natural resources inventory completed by WWE.
• Evaluate how the natural resources have changed since 1997.
• Document the natural variability of natural resources in the study area.
This work was completed under Service Request Release No. MCC-0400-6.
2.0 STUDY AREA DESCRIPTION
The study area is a relatively remote area that consists of both public (U.S. Forest Service
[USFS]) and private land ownership located between Mount Gunnison to the south and the North
Fork of the Gunnison River (North Fork) to the north. The study area, which was defined by the
MCC, consists of approximately 14.5 square miles of land located in Townships 13 and 14
South, Range 90 West, in Gunnison County, Colorado.
