2.04.6 (2) (a) (i)
GEOLOGY OF COAL SEAMS.
nce the permit application is for units contained in the shale
member above the Rollins Sandstone, further discussion will be
limited to these coal units. Specifically, the coal seams within
the shale member have been identified in alphabetical order
from the "A" coal seam (which lies immediately above the Rollins
Sandstone) upward to the "F" coal seam, which in this area is
approximately 300 to 350 feet stratigraphically above the Rollins
Sandstone. The "D" coal seam is approximately 150 feet above the
Rollins and is separated from the "A", "B", and "C" coal seams
and the Rollins sandstone by claystone, silts tone and shales,
effectively sealing it from any direct hydrologic communication
with the other units below it.
As can be seen from•the Electric Logs - "D" Coal Seam Map, 2.04.5-3b,
the "D' coal seam in this area is underlain by five to ten feet of
impervious claystone and shale. The "D" coal seam ranges in thickness
from eight to eleven feet, averaging ten feet. The coal itself,
enerally, is classified as sub-bituminous A to high-volatile C in rank,
~d is suited for power generation. A full chemical analysis of
the 'D" coal seam is available on Table 2.04.6(2)(a)(i)-1.. The ,,"D"
coal seam is the thickest continuous coal seam in the area. As can
be seen on the Isopach Map - "D" Coal Seam, 2.04.6-1a, the "D" coal
seam ranges in thickness from approximately 8.5 feet in the east to
a maximum thickness of approximately 10.5 feet near the center of
the permit area.
since the "A" coal seam is not presently being mined, an underground
inspection and description of interburden, local fracturing and cleating
as well as presence of stringers is not possible at this time.
A listing of reserves for the "D" coal seam within coal lease D-036906
is on Table 2.04.6(2)(a)(i)-2. This information was obtained from a
report prepared for the U.S. Geological Survey dated April 20, 1981.
,I
~':'
REVISED May 8, 1981 52a '
}
~~:
