2.04.5 (1)
• The alluvial aquifers and glacial deposits overlying the Red Canyon
A 1 Mine and proposed # 2 Mine site will be affected by the mining
operation in the immediate vicinity of the subcrop of the "D" and "E"
coal seams. However, these effects will be minimized by limiting
the mining operation an adequate distance from the subcrop itself to
eliminate significant induced recharge from the base of the alluvial
aquifer. The beds dip three to four degrees to the north, and
the base of the alluvial material rises to the north at approximately
the same rate (refer to the Isopach Map-Alluvial Aquifers, 2.04.5-3,
and the Geologic Cross Section Maps, 2.04.5-4 and 2.04.4-5). Ckioe the coal has
dipped 250 to 400 feet north from the subcrop, it is buried by
25 to 30 feet of relatively impervious clays tone and shale material.
This prevents direct vertical recharge from the alluvium and minimizes
the additional amount of water which can be transmitted through the
fractured coal, due to the affects of compaction on the coal seam.
The amount of water anticipated to be induced by the mining activity
is small considering the storage capacity and transmissivity of the
• alluvial material itself.
SURFACE WATER SYSTEM.
Surface drainage systems within or adjacent to the permit area of
tfie Red Canyon (-1 Mine and proposed A2 Mine are Ward Creek,D)illiams Creek
^_otton~aood Creek, Riser Creek, Rvaell Draw and agricultural irrigation systems.
The complexity of irrigations systems in total would be difficult
to show; therefore, on Drawing 2.04.5-1 the location of ditch
diversions from Ward Creek and Williams Creek are keyed on a
portion of a USGS Quad Map. These numbers correspond to the list
(Table 2.04.5-1) of ditch names, priority number and appropriation.
Runoff irrigation coming onto the yorth end of the mine site is
mainly from Sunrise Ditch (10), runoff from the mine site is
contributary to Carbon Ditch (13). Carbon ditch run-off is
contributary ultimately to Ward Creek.
Flow records of the creeY.s can be found in the Hydrology Description,
Section 2.04.7.
C J
RF.viSED May 8, 1981
50
