• 2.04.5(1)
The Iles Formation is considered by most investigators to be
an inter-tongueing thick sequence of marine Mancos Shale and
marine to non-marine sandstone and coal units. Further to the
north within the Piceance Basin the Iles is composed in descending
order: the Rollins Trout Creek Sandstone, the Cozzette Sandstone,
the Corcoran Sandstone., and the Sego Sandstone all separated by
thick tongues of Mancos Shale. The Iles formation is 1,600 feet
thick at Pleeker, Colorado and is predominantly non-marine, however,
as far south as Coal Basin it consists of 1,175 feet of only the
Cozzette and Rollins Sandstone with an intervening tongue of Mancos
Shale. In the immediate area of the Red Canyon tl Mine, the only
representation of the Iles is believed to be the Rollins Sandstone
with the underlying Mancos Shale being several thousand feet thick
below the Rollins.
•
n
U
REVISED May 8, 19 B1 4 1 a
