Grand Junction Pipc
' Proposed Whilcwatcr Pit. Whitewaler, CO
Februan• 19, 199R Page 3
protection from lower floods would be afforded be the railroad embankment, behveen this proposed gravel
' extraction pit and the Gunnison River.
Grand Junction Lincoln DeVore has very little information regarding the flood plains in this portion of the
' Gunnison River rcaclr. Duc to the number of upstream resen•oirs, to include the Curecanti Counh~ project on
the Gunnison Rn cr, the Paonia Reservoir on the North Fork of the Gunnison River and Ridgccvay 12escrvau on
the Uncompahgre Rica, the potential ofcatastmphic flooding is significantly reduced over an uncontrolled ricer
' system.
ECONOMIC GEOLOGIC DEPOSITS
' The primary geologic deposit in this arcs is this grarcl and cobble resource, proposed for extraction.
Sonic oil and gas exploration has bccn accomplished m this general area but. the principle production areas
' nearest to this site arc on the slopes of Grand Mesa. 10 to 15 miles to the east.
This site is adjaccnl to the Uncompahgre Uplift which. includes enormous deposits and resen•es of uranium
' bearing rocks. Several prospcets for uranium ores in the Morrison and older Formations arc present in the area
but. serious prospects and deposits are located more than IG miles to the southwest.
' GEOLOGIC HAZARDS
The principle geologic hazard to be considered on this site is flooding from tither the Gunnison River during
' an extreme even[ or Gooding from Whitewater Creek. Exact delineation of this hazard is beyond [he scope of
this report. In gcnaal, r~accl extraction operations arc considered to be compatible with Good hazard areas, with
prcwulions regarding pollution or redirection of Good waters onto adjaccnl property.
In general. slope smbilih problems arc not expected on this sift, except those notmalh~ associated with open pit
graccl extraction operations.
' It is believed that all pcrtmcnt points. as related to the Geologic Characteristics, which may significanth~ affect
the proposed development. hate bccn addressed. If am' further qucsUOns arise or if GRAND JUNCTION
LINCOLN-DcVORE can be of any further senicc, please do not hesitate to contact this office at any time.
Respectfully submntcd.
GRANDJUNCTION
LINCOLN-DcVOR E.
