-29-
• wrote my first report on mine drainage back on the East Coast in 1974. I have
worked, on and off, not consistently, but on and off, associated with the
implications of mine drainage of water quality when I was with the U. S.
Geological Survey for six and one half years and of the waters coming down
from West Yirginia and Pennsylvania in heavily mined primarily coal mined area
in the Shenandoah River and the Potomac River and the Potomac River Basin. My
courses include -- about 1/5 of np~ water quality courses include treatment of
acid mine drainage, as I mentioned I teach the geomicrobiology oaf metals and
sulfites in the geochemistry courses taught at Colorado School of Mines.
MR. N. COHEN: What's your academic background?
MR. R. COHEN: I have a Bachelors Degree in Biophysics from Temple
University in Philadelphia, I have a Ph.D. from University of Yirginia,
Department of Environmental Sciences.
• MR. HOLDER: And your revegetation background and expertise?
MR. R. COHEN: I have never gone out myself and planted on revegetation.
I would say that my revegetation background is mostly from the meetings I've
attended, the literature I've read, the books I've read on revegetation. So
that is not a hands-on experience.
MS. WINTER: Have you ever seen any of the revegetation sites that have
won awards from the Board?
MR. R. COHEN: In fact, I've shown slides of the Rangely area in my
classes. I don't know if that's one of the award winning ones. But I
actually show some successful revegetation, mostly from the results of oil
exploration drilling and reclamation of the areas after that. But, I've seen
the fabulously reclaimed regions that have been done properly.
MS. WINTER: But, you' re not very familiar with the recent things that
• have been done by companies winning Mined Land Awards. Is that Fair to say?
