• and ability, slope and surface stability, adequacy in height, size and shape
to provide sufficient volume for sediment and detain water and selection of
proper spillways and outlet devices, passing of design storm events and proper
outflow rates. The pond has been designed under the direction of a qualified,
registered Professional Engineer.
The purpose of the sedimentation pond is to not only provide a final measure
to prevent additional contributions of sediment outside the mine area, but
also to provide a means of compliance with all applicable effluent
limitations, especially with respect to total suspended solids.
The engineering parameters and supporting calculations for the sediment pond,
permanent channel, diversion ditches and culverts are included following this
• narrative discussion. The locations of the drainage control structures are
shown on the Mine Facilities Map (Map 12).
Sedimentation Pond
Pond Design
The plan view design of the new sedimentation pond to be constructed at the
Coal Gulch operation is shown as Figure 1, Sediment Pond Design - Plan view.
A cross section showing the sedimentation pond with details of the embankment
height, principal spillway and emergency spillway is set forth as Figure 2,
Sediment Pond Design - Cross Section.
•
Revised 9/12/86
2
