CHIMNEY AOCR VEGETATION STUDY, 198']
•
•
IN T RODU Cf IO N
On September 16 and 1'], 1987 a vegetation study uas conducted at the Chimney
Rock Mine to determine the affect of grazing by cattle on the reclaimed area.
In order to determine what affect
herbaceous cover transects were read
reference areas.
grazing had on the reclaimed area,
on both the reclaimed and Mixed Shrub
METHODS
All sampling sites were picked at random. Statistical parameters and
equations were the same as those used during baseline data collection. The
desired confidence level for adequate statistical interpretation is 80
percent (d=.1x). To estimate sample adequacy a minimum of 15 transects were
sampled to obtain a preliminary adequacy valve using the following Yormula:
t2s2
Nmin >
(dx)2
Where: Nmin minimum number of samples
s = sample standard deviation
t t statistic (1.282)
d =amount of reduction to detect (0.1)
x = sample mean
If necessary additional samples were taken until adequacy was met or a
minimum of 50 transects were taken.
Percentage cover of vegetation (identified by species, rock, litter, and
bare ground) was determined during sampling by using a randomly selected
50-meter line transact. At 1-m intervals with the line, the first hit along
a line projected downward perpendicular to the transect was recorded and
placed in one of the previously mentioned categories. Only the first
intercepted plant part was recorded.
In addition shrub density was estimated on the reclalmed area using a 1 x 50
meter belt transect.,

u
