Sample size adequacy was calculated after the first five plots. Sampling continued until the <br />• indicated sample size was reached. Sample size adequacy was achieved on the dryland <br />reference area with 31 plots (Table 1). On t}te irrigated pasture reference area, 17 plots <br />were required for adequacy. <br />Following completion of the field work, a]] production samples were air-dried. The samples <br />were then reweighed. The results of the reweighing were used to estimate mean herbaceous <br />production for each proposed reference area. <br />SPECIES COMPOSITION <br />The composition of plant species in each area was evaluated using the same data acquired <br />from the vegetative cover transects. T}te analysis involved calculating a relative cover value <br />for each species.
