~.
~ EXHIBIT D (Cont'd)
~ Overburden varies from about 2 feet to approximately 16 feet
. from west to east across the property. Average thickness is a
meaningless figure because lateral variations are sudden and very
^ severe.
The SCS reports and MLRB staff concur that the soil is a grayish
^
brown-brown cobbly, sandy loam in which the cobbles range from 50 to
^ 75 percent by volume. According to the SCS this material is reason-
ably uniform in thickness at 18 inches. In all stripping operations
^ on the north side approximately the top 18 inches of material will
be removed and stacked on the east side of the pit in segregated
^ piles from the rest of the overburden. At the request of the MLRB
^ staff not only the area to be mined but all areas to be used for
soil, overburden or clay material piles or roads will be stripped
^ to a depth of 18 inches prior to use. The piles designated soil
will be seeded with western wheatgrass to prevent erosion.
^
After the overburden is removed, mining is started from each
^ of the four clay zones. The material is removed by dozer. It is
then loaded onto a truck by a front-end loader. Other equipment
^ used in the pit and stockpile areas includes, but is not limited
~ -
to, a scraper, a Kolema `screen a grizzly an \ water pumps.~~
^
After the various clays are brought out of the pit, they are
~ screened to remove material that is too large. The clays are then
stored in segregated piles. Whe^ the off-site brick plant calls for
^ various amounts of each clay, it can be loaded out quickly.
Since mining progresses down the dip of the clay beds and

north and south along the strike (see map Exhibit D-1 and Sketches 1
9 (Revised)
^
