Wes! E!k A4ine
• The minable areas of the E and B-Seams can be seen by comparing Map 13 (B-Seam thickness)
with Map 18 (E-Seam thickness). E and B-Seam mine plans, maximizing the recovery of the
E and B-Seam reserves, are shown in Map 51 and Map 52, respectively.
Mountain Coal Company plans to mine coal from the E and B-Seams in a descending
sequence. A descending sequence was chosen to maximize reserve recovery and improve
overall ground conditions during second seam mining.
Mountain Coal Company has assessed the recoverable coal reserves of the Federal coal leases
contained in the E and B-Seams. Mountain Coal Company's best estimate is that there are
164.6 million tons of recoverable reserves in the E and B-Seams (Table 28).
Table 28 Estimate of Recoverable Coal Reserves at the West Elk Mine
Recoverable Reserves (millions of tons)

Seam Lease
COC-56447 Lease
COC-54558 Lease
D-044569 Lease
C-0117192 Lease
C-1362 MCC Fee &
Fee Lease
Total
E 0.3 0.0 0.5 0.0 53.3 9.0 63.1
B 33.6 9.0 5.3 5.9 42.7 5.0 101.5
Total 33.9 9.0 5.8 5.9 96.0 14.0 164.6
• Note: Recoverable reserves are based upon Curren[ mine plans.
The mine plan was laid out to recover as much coal as possible with consideration for
personnel and equipment safety and surface protection. The percent of recovery in the
development (room and pillar) sections is approximately 40 percent, more or less, depending
upon pillar design. Longwall panel extraction is 100 percent of the mining height, which is
planned at approximately 12.0 feet for the B-Seam and 11.0 feet for the E-Seam. The overall
recovery of the mine layout has not been calculated, because it varies with changes in mine
plans.
Coal recovery depends on the method of coal extraction. Using room and pillar methods,
Mountain Coa] Company recovered about 50 percent of coal reserves in the F-Seam. With the
longwall mining method, Mountain Coal Company recovers (and plans to recover) about 70
percent of in-place coal reserves of the B and E-Seams (Table 29), based upon current mine
plans.

2.05 8/93Stip.48; Revised Jan. 1994 PROS; 8.~94TR71; Revised Jun. 1995PR06
