Exhibit B Mining Plan
BLM EAST GRAVEL PIT
The SLP1 East Gravel Pit was first entered by the County on the
19th day of July 1974. This gravel pit was opened by the County
to provide a source of sand and gravel for County road maintenance and
construction within the vicinity of the pit.
Topsoil was removed with dozers and loaders and stockpiled within the
lease area as shown on the General h1ap (Exhibit C - Stage 1). Gravel was
then excavated using dozers and front-end loaders in a northwesterly
direction from the south lease boundary too maximum depth of 20 feet.
Prior to additional excavation of yravels in the lease tract, the
stockpiled topsoil will probably 6e moved into the excavation in the southern
portion of the tract. The topsoil in the northern portion of the tract will
also be removed and stockpiled in the excavation in the southern portion
of the tract. Gravels will then be excavated in the area from which the
topsoil has been removed continuing in a northern direction as shown on
the General P~1ap (Exhibit C - Stage 2).
Old existing roads are used as haul roads, and no additional disturbance
is anticipated for haul road construction outside the lease tract as shown
on the General Map. Total maximum area to be affected by this operation is
six (6) acres.
No surface or ground water is present in the pit and water is not
anticipated to create any problem during operations.
Approximately 97,342 cubic yards of material has been excavated in
the pit since beginning operation in 1974. It is estimated that approximately
4,500 cubic yards of topsoil material has been stockpiled on location at
this time as shown on the General 41ap (Phase 1). In addition approximately
9,000 cubic yards of crushed gravel and 3,000 cubic yards of sand have been
stockpiled on the lease tract. area as shown on the General Map (Phase 1).
It is estimated that before mining operations cease an additional 5,000
cubic yards of topsoil will be stockpiled and 90,000 to 100,000 cubic
yards of gravel and sand will be removed. The perimeter of the pit has
been fenced with a barbed wire fence sufficient to keep cattle out and will
be posted with warning signs if the area becomes hazardous to man or
animals.
Operation will be restricted from the edge or rim of the mesa top
so as to provide a natural screening of the pit. The pit and all operations
shall be closed down from December 1 to April 1 each year.
In the event that any cultural or paleontologic resources are found,
all operations will immediately stop and the District Manager of the Bureau
of Land Management will be notified.
