At the request of Mr. C. C. McFall, an archaeological survey of the
Bourg Coal property area vas conducted by Kath_-ya L. Joyner and David J.
HcGuire on October 28, 1978. The Baurg Coal lease is located on 160
acres specified by the following topographic coordinates: S~, SFSC, Sec-
tion 7 and N~, ?t-r'r., Section 18, Township 9 N, Range 7$, W, in Jackson
County, Colorado. Survey activities were also eateaded to include about
2.42 kilometers (1.5 miles) of a planned access road to the coal property.
The proposed site for the railroad siding on the William Mattocks ranch
was not included is this surface teconnaissaace due to the ambiguous
boundazies received in the original request. The legal location of that
land not surveyed included E~:, NWT:, Section 32 and W~, SW~, Section 29,
Township 10 N, Range 79 W. The access into and througi this area was
. included in the October survey (=ig. 1).
Since the completion of the Fall survey there has been a clarif'_-
cation of the area to be surveyed. This portion will be coopletr_' as
soon as ground visibility reaches +80:.
This archaeological survey cas perfo:~ed be tao associates of
Joseph. J. Lischka under the authorisation of Professional Sezvices Ant-
iquity Pe_-mit 780-043 issued b? the Departaental Consulting 3rc::aeoi-
ogist, Laited Staves Depar-a_t o_` the ?nterior, to the Cniversity of
Colorado at Boulder. Ia a letter dated October 25, 1978, C. Ca: e•:
McFall supplied survey autheri=ation, legal description of the major
portion of the area scheduled for survey, and a 7.5' topographic map
indicating the survey area and access roads to Joseph J. Lischka. Mr.
McFall also staked and flagged the center lines on the access roads
. and the 160 acre survey area corners. The use of stakes and flags as
boundary markers allowed the surveyors to work with relative ease on
that tract of land.
