4.18 PROTECTION OF FISH, WILDLIFE, AND RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES
• As explained in Section 2.04.11, the Bear Coal Company has maintained
contact with representatives of the Colorado Division of Wildlife for
the purpose of minimizing disturbance and adverse impacts on the fish
and wildlife located in the permit and adjacent areas. The relocation
of surface facilities for the Bear No. 3 Portals has been designed, to
the extent possible, to accomplish this goal. Throughout the life of
the mine, the Bear Coal Company will plan to continue coordinating on a
regular basis with atl interested regulatory agencies to further advance
minimization of impacts and enhancement of wildlife resources.
As described in Section 2.04.11, no critical habitat or any threatened
or endangered species have been identified within the permit or adjacent
areas which might be affected by the mining operations.
The post-mining land use, as described in Section 2.05.5, will be
• undeveloped lands with limited residential use. Inherent with the
undeveloped land use will be the concurrent use of the area by wildlife.
The seed mixture proposed in Section 2.05.4 contains diversity required
for wildlife which might use the permit area for habitat. In addition,
the plant species proposed in the revegetation plan will provide cover
similar to that presently encountered on undisturbed areas of the permit
and adjacent areas.
No major impact on wildlife within the permit area should occur as a
result of the continuation of the Bear Coal Company's operations. A
discussion of mitigation activities for wildlife is found in Section
2.05.6.
•
4.18-1
