4.15.8 Revegetation Success Criteria
• As mentioned in Section 4.15.7, the area for surface facilities
of the Bear No. 3 Mine has been disturbed by past mining opera-
tions. Therefore, the requirements of Section 4.15.10 will apply
to the application.
4.15.9 Revegetation Success Criteria; Cropland
No cropland will be reestablished on the reclaimed areas; there-
fore, the requirements of this Section are not applicable to the
Bear Coal Company.
4.15.10 Revegetation Success Criteria; Previously Mined Lands:
Areas to be Developed for Industrial or Residential Use
As stated in Section 4.15.7 and Section 4.15.8, the area of
surface facilities incidental to the underground mining opera-
tions is approximately 8.4 acres in size and has been disturbed
by past underground mining operations and some limited residen-
tial use. The following information is presented in order to
establish a suitable cover standard for the disturbed area.
1. The cover standard for the Blue Ribbon Mine site is
44.3%. This standard is applicable to Blue Ribbon's riparian
area as well as its grassland community. The Operator's dis-
turbed area is similar to the reclaimed riparian area at the Blue
• Ribbon Mine site.
2. In their findings document for the Bear No. 1, No. 2
and No. 3 mines dated June 18, 1987, the Division set a cover
standard of 40% for the Bear No. 1 and No. 2 mines.
3. A 1982 baseline vegetation inventory for the Somerset
Mine found the Mountain Shrubland vegetation type had a total
absolute cover of 55.6%.
The Operators disturbed area is a combination of riparian area
and mountain shrubland. It is however predominantly a predis-
turbed riparian area. Considering the above information, the
Operator considers a 45% cover standard to be suitable to deter-
mine revegetation success.
4.15-3
Revised June 29, 1990
C 1
